Can Bad Be Mistaken For Good When You're Down Low?

So many of us at times find ourselves in that place where life makes no sense! We have a serious brush with the thorns, the thickets and suddenly the roses are gone, no where to be seen, and their fragrance disappears into the thin air. We want life to always go in our favor, yet it don't. We agonize deeply about finding our big break in life, finding our life passion and that 'AHA' moment when we say this is it for sure! That candid moment that would somehow satisfy our appetite of longing to be in the spotlight before the world that finally you and I have found our calling and we are doing what God has called us to do.

Then there are other times, as gifted as you and I are, there are circumstances in the 'real low moments' that gives rise to the occasion of you questioning yourself in a way that denotes fear rather than faith that goes something like this, "how can someone as gifted as I am go through such kind of hell?" "why do bad things always seem to happen to good people?" "Why would God allow this to happen to me?" "Is it possible that all the hell that I am going through, one thing after another, that this is what God has planned and this is my purpose for my life?"

You take several glances back at the mountain top you were just on. Meanwhile God is silent! And I mean silent! You hear nothing! You feel helpless! No one else has the answers, because you find yourself not being able to even explain exactly what is really going on with you. If you are not careful, it is in these moments of being down real low that bad begins to look good and you mistake the process for your purpose in life.

Speaking in the first person, I will be very honest with you and tell you that I personally do not like the process of what God put me through at times. I really don't! I've had those moments where I try to reason it out with Him. I cry, I feel numb with the pain while expressing my heart's desire that it be made different, if not easier. When God brought me out of my Egypt, and brought me into the church thereby making me a part of His body, I did not 'sign up' in agreement to go through that kind of hell. But in retrospect, that is foolish of me to think in that way! If God spared not His only Son, but gave Him up as a living sacrifice for my sins and yours, where do I get the idea, that He would somehow set my trials, testing and tribulations to be any easier?

In my moment of 'foolish reasoning' and negative thinking, a woman of God and my very good friend Minister Shirley Moore, who had no idea whatsoever what I was going through sent me an email telling me, "God is working things out for you, even when you don't feel like it. Have faith and be thankful." She further wrote, "Don't be mislead into thinking that we're gonna break thru this barrier and come into this dimension of power and not have to go thru anything along the way! Don't expect God to move all the devils out of your way. If Jesus had to fight His way thru and He was the only begotten Son of God....we might as well stop complaining, stop crying, stop worrying, stop being discouraged, roll up our sleeves, and say, alright -come on!! Stop being discouraged and fight the good fight of faith."

What is the lesson that I wish for you to take away from my experience?

  • When you've been down real low, bad begin to look good. It looks good because we've gone through so much in life in such short space of time. We've been inundated by what life has thrown at us that we begin to accept whatever comes our way now as the acceptable norn. Our rhetorical ramblings and musings of our past experiences leaves us with that feeling of inertia, that we cannot even appreciate, much less accept the real thing and the authentic good that God promised to give to us in Jeremiah 29: 11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
  • When you are down low in the pit or going through a valley moment, it is never the right time to make a decision. Decisions we make today have life-long implications. We cannot go back then and reverse them or the choices we would have made. Some perhaps, but most are irreversible. Joseph could have chosen to retaliate against his brothers who threw him into the pit and who later on sold him into slavery, but he did not. He endured the process and ended up in the palace to rule over nations, including his brothers who did such evil to him. God Himself allow bad things so that He can demonstrate His power to bless you in a place where you had never even dreamed of! Joseph was able to show his brothers their folly by telling them, "you thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive." [Genesis 50:20
  • When you are vulnerable, you cannot trust your own judgement. God warns us never to get cocky and overconfident because that is a recipe for disaster. Realize your vulnerability. Have faith in God. Trust Him and never rely on your own understanding. [Proverbs 3:5-6] It is not in man that walketh to direct his own steps, it is God. [Jeremiah 10:23]
  • Avoid murmuring against divine disposals and commands of what God has allowed in your life. Murmuring is a sin that greatly provokes God especially when it is allowed to grow to such an extent as would lead to apostasy, idolatry, and a revolt from Him and His ways. [Exodus 32:9-10] Keep on running the race with patience and know that absolutely nothing shall separate us from God's love for us. [Romans 8:35-39]
On your way to the palace, you will have pain, and you will experience what it's like being in the pit and also the prison but never loose sight of the promise of the expected outcome and divine favor God has planned for you.

Count it all joy my dear EMoments readers when you fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. ref.James 1:2-3. God will always test your character to see what you are really made up of before He approves of you for the palace. But rest assured when He gets through with you, you will come out better than pure gold or diamond!

  1. Hi Yvonne:
Excellent column today! One thing I'm fond saying at my blog is:
In the middle of a storm when you're being tossed about and you can't see what will come of this emotional storm you're in, it is completely understandable to lose hope, to lose faith, however storms are necessary to blow away unwanted debris. Once your storm has passed and there is a brightening to your soul, you MAY look back and have an epiphany and say: HOLY COW! That's why that happened. Just hold on and don't give up.

One of my favorite poems is on my blog and I think it relates to your column today. Check it out:

Continuing to LOVE what you have to say here, Yvonne, and am happy to have discovered your blog.

    1. Hi Chris:
I am definitely even more encouraged by what you have said here in your comment. I especially love the fact that you have taken off the blinders from my eyes to see even more clearly of how necessary it is for the storm to come in order to blow away unwanted debris. (which only create blockages in our lives)Powerful words you've shared! Have a blessed day!

  2. Hi Minister Wilson, What a joy to know that at least there is someone who is honest enough to say that these negative moments do present itself... like a mockery to your faith. The enemy of our soul would like for us to just through in the towel when we are at our lowest ebb, BUT, I love God....He said ..His strength is made perfect in our weakness.. so my dear friend when we are weak then our Daddy's stength kicks in and swipes is off our feet as he carries us in his arms. Only one pair of foot prints can be seen in the sand as we have no need to walk when we are weak, just rest in his arms. The weak moments will come, negative circumstances will surround us, weapons will be formed, but will not prosper. Our Father has already made provisions for these negative moments. He is the answer. We are winners, overcomers, more than a conqueror. Blessings!!!

    1. Hi Pastor Ava:
I am so much better today. I am strengthened! - thanks to and everyone else who have taken the time to speak life, encouragement and hope into me. It is really a true saying that while we need faith to guide us, we surely need the fellowship of other saints to guard us. Peace, love and blessings!

  3. We loose common sense when we let desperation take over. Our judgment becomes flawed, bad begins to look like all things great, bright and beautiful... It's so easy to throw in the towel and grab at the next best thing when you feel God is silent. Thank God for His grace that has kept us through every trial we've gone through.

I am comforted in the truth that He's taking me through it to prepare me for His glorious plan.
1 Peter 5:10 encourages me to breath easy, and hold on.

This piece is a great reminder that down times are not isolated events for a select few believers. For many are the afflictions of the righteous... every one of us, but indeed God delivers us... All we have to do is keep holding on and trusting.

    1. Hi iNyamu:
I'm in total agreement with what you've said! Some things I do tend to handle better than others - I can speak the word of God over my life as I am going through the process and I make it out in one piece. Then other times I really do loose common sense and that's where the enemy creeps in and I find myself sinking. But I thank God for believers like yourself - iron right there to sharpen another iron! Blessings!!!

  4. No fire, no refining I tell myself when I am feeling the heat. If I am meant to shine to God's glory, then I must be prepared to be refined and I see now that to truly bling to the glory of God, those hot storms must come. The promise is he will always be in it with me. But like you, I really hate those times. As I type I am not sure I have come to a place where I totally accept my last storm.....but I trust God. If he could have taught me that lesson some other way. If I could have come to see myself for who I was some other way, he would have used that way. But instead he chose the way he chose. It was hot and I did not find it funny but now, I sort of get it. Don't fully accept it but get it better now. Thanks for your post. It has pushed me closer to fuller acceptance of God's choice of fire for me.

    1. Hi NaijaWoman:
I am truly appreciative of you taking the time out to stop by my blogsite and for also sharing your thoughts. Thank you very much! To add to what you have said, I see a beautiful priceless diamond, one that shines - the reason that it is like that is because the one who made it had to put it through the process of intense heat to remove all of the unwanted the debris from it. If any of us saw the diamond before the process, we would not buy it. Also, take the example of the olive, it must go through the process of much breaking, crushing, and squeezing in order for the oil to begin to flow. To look at in within the context of our spiritual life, the yoke destroying anointing begins to flow only after we've been crushed, broken, bruised and so much more.

You are your ministry, and your ministry is you, God is using you for His glory to bring deliverance, healing and salvation to many nations. You may not see all the end results of what you are doing, but behind the scenes, God is working! He is getting all the glory. Let's give Him all the praise and thank Him for what He is doing! Keep shining for His glory!!

      Peace, love, blessings!!!!
      Yvonne

  5. I love this post! My prayer is that God will give us more of His Spirit of discernment that we are able to tell quickly the difference between the bad and the good. So many have gone through storms of adversity for so long, they have retired themselves from even looking for the promise any longer. They've grown cold towards life just s they have perceived life to be cold towards them. They seem to have lost hope but I trust God to restore faith and hope in them once again.

if I have something to add to the discussion. Usually it's caused by the sincerness displayed in the post I browsed. And after this article "Can Bad Be Mistaken For Good When You're

Could it be just me or do a few of these responses come across like they are left by brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are posting at additional social sites, I'd like to follow everything new you have to post.
